Ophthalmology is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases related to the eyes and vision. Ophthalmologists are trained to provide comprehensive eye care, including the prescription of corrective lenses, medical treatment, and surgical interventions.

Eye Examinations

Ophthalmologists conduct thorough eye examinations to assess vision and detect any potential eye conditions. These exams may include visual acuity tests, tonometry to measure eye pressure, and examinations of the retina, cornea, and other structures to identify issues such as glaucoma or cataracts.

Prescription Eyewear

For individuals with refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, ophthalmologists prescribe corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses. This helps improve and optimize vision, addressing common visual impairments.

Medical Treatment

Ophthalmologists provide medical treatment for various eye conditions, including infections, inflammations, and chronic diseases. They may prescribe medications, recommend eye drops, or employ other non-invasive methods to manage and alleviate symptoms.

Eye Surgery

When necessary, ophthalmologists perform surgical procedures to address issues such as cataracts, glaucoma, or refractive errors. Common eye surgeries include cataract extraction, laser eye surgery (LASIK), and procedures to improve the drainage of intraocular fluid in cases of glaucoma.
